Established on 24 April 1928 in order to help reduce the financial burden police and staff at the Police Department. Without compromising on welfare, KPD has developed from a co-operative society that provides business loans to a conglomerate that until now had assets at book value of RM 689.5 million.

KPD is one of the four financial institutions recognised by the Parliament as a Bumiputera Fund Agency. The other three financial institutions are Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB), Lembaga Tabung Angkatan Tentera (LTAT) and Lembaga Tabung Haji (LTH).
